Wave function is saying you would nd particles more likely in the centre (where the hills and valleys are) rather than the ends. Electrons in atom work in 3-d space. N = principle quantum #; determines the energy of the orbital. L = angular momentum quantum #; take positive integer values from 0 to n-1; determines the shape of orbital.
