Week 17 Lec 1 Feb 4 February-05-13 9:29 PM  Shields o All have boss in the middle o Shields are made of plywood and leather  Hard to find full shield o Late empire smaller shields o About 5 cms, a couple of incices thick o Because soldiers were constantly walking needed lighter shields  Swords o Larum originated from spain Screen clipping taken: 05/02/2013 9:34 PM o Later longer swords used o Used for stabbing not slashing  Soldiers of the later empire wore/had o Trousers (adopted from the North) o Pilla (spear) o Shield (with christian symbol) o Different kind of helmet  Two halves joined together  Less expensive  Weaker  When marching standard bearers o Made with different circular elements o Always had an eagle (power) o At top had a hand o Bearers wore animal skins on head  How did they fight o First line threw Pilla, moved forward protecting body with shield and sword o Power of the stab can hit the internal organs  Only way to be sure to kill o 2nd lines throwing pillas over the heads of the first lines and then advancing o Use Testudo (tortoise) formation when attacking cities
