CLST 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Perioeci, Spartiate, Helots
Document Summary
Thursday, october 19th: political status, economic class, how the two intersect (cid:41804) political status. Existing in athens, but also other greek polis state, there was three primary classes: citizens spartiates, knights, resident aliens perioikoi, metics, metics at athens were given red robes marching in to the parthenon. Furies rebrand themselves as eumenides (kindly ones) and they too wear red robes: slaves helots, thetes. It was possible to change status, but normally the status was determined by birth circumstances. Status is a matter of politics and a matter of rights or lack therefore. On the other hand, class is determined by wealth. Oxen: surfs: served as light infantry were only able to afford minimal equipment, like a slingshot. There was a habit of pairing opposites as a way of thinking: the elite was opposed to the masses: contrasting wealth and numbers. Later, hubris became illegal, where charges could be brought on by any citizens, demonstrating how seriously this issue was taken.
