Macedonian tribes promised the uppers protection, thus unifying the two sections: philip ii solidified the unification. Southern greeks were not certain that macedonians were sufficiently greek. Lifestyle of macedonian nobility had more in common with that of homeric heroes than with that of classical greeks. Monarchy was central institution of macedonian society. Inherently not greek (to be subservient was not luxurious and democracy was much preferred) Kings chose their closest advisors and members of their bodyguard from these royal companions (hetairoi)
