Feb 7 February-07-14 2:33 PM • Rise of Pompey o Power struggle led to rise of Pompey o Senate opposed o In favour of Plebs o Senate passes consultum ultimum against Lepidus • Gave Pompey imperium to deal with Lepidus (unusual since Pompey  was not a magistrate) o Senate was stupid: they couldn't deal with the crisis ­ gave Pompey more power!  Or access to power o Pompey was successful ­ Lepidus escaped but later died • Good loyal army behind P • Crisis number 2: o Spain: Q Sertorius ­ governor in 83 • He was a really good guy, good governor, moderate, opposed Sulla, led  an uprising in Spain • Populares guy • Talked Spaniards into revolting • 80­73 guerilla war, successful but Sertorius was murdered by a traitor • New commander (Perperna) easily defeated by Pompey, end of war  (72/1) • Pompey treated the Spaniards well: some even given citizenship;  Pompey loved the Spaniards as a result • Crisis numba 3 o Revolt of the Gladiators (73­71) o Defeated 4 Roman armies, slaves led by…….Spartacus o Lucius Crassus (Praetor, 73) • Now (as propraetor), given command against slaves • Very successful against the slaves  Pompey turned up after Spain  Crassus does the work, Pompey takes the glory • Crassus captured and crucified 6000 slaves along via Appia from Capua  to Rome • Both Crassus and Pompey claimed victory and both wanted triumph • Spartacus was killed in Battle • Pompey, Crassus both wanted Consulship  Crassus has been Praetor, Pompey has not (too young for  anything) • But…both were technically not legal because they had  their armies with them (had to disband them) • Who would stop them? No one. Senate didn't like it, but  who cares? • In 70, both got triumph and consulship • Crassus got an ovation (small triumph), Pompey got a  real triumph • Both popular, both populares • They do all they can to get rid of the measures that Sulla  had passed before • Optimates had been made strong, as with Senate • So C and P decide to give the power to the Plebs • Tribunes get their power back • the Censorshp was revived • Wanted to be able to control the Senate • After consulship, both Crassus and Pompey retire • In the east, pirates were still pirates
