CLST 304 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Peristyle, Antis, Kleobis And Biton
Document Summary
Greeks after persian war are different from before the war. Black figure: incision method to mark details, still painting things in black. Red figure: paint all around black, the figure itself is left in the clay, figures look red, don"t use incision anymore. Kouroi are the males, korai are the females. Start to worship in open air sanctuaries. There were a lot of local sanctuaries, then there were the big ones. The altar was the most important thing, all sanctuaries had them. Then start to build temples to house the altars, were houses of the deities. The sanctuaries are what brought the greeks together as a people. By end of 7th c. start to see typical archaic statues: kouros (kouroi), kore (korai) ), but normally offerings in sactuaries or grave markers: idealized, heroic, not true portraits. No statues of old people, not realistic. Bronze out of fashion until the next century, use marble now instead.
