Art and architecture in the late republic (last century b. c. : field of mars. Outside the walls of the city in the pre-imperial periods. Soldiers would train, gather before leaving, and gather before disbanding and re-entering civic life on this field: senatus populusque romanus. Census taken to know the worth of everyone the wealthy were eligible for the senate. Wealthy also the only ones being elected to the high offices. In the republican system the elite have the power but they need the support of the populous if they want to be able to control how things are done. Wealthy court the populous so that they can achieve these high offices. Architecture in the service of roman ideals the buildings and monuments that get put up in rome will get put up with an idea of the power structure. Two main ways elites could compete with each other for public attention via architecture at this time.
