They are not external to this world, and they didn"t make it: the greeks were not concerned with the creation of the world. Their most important difference from humans is immortality. God is omnipotent but for the greeks this is not true: the gods can"t do everything they want eg. in the iliad zeus wants the. Trojan"s to win but knows this is not possible. If the gods are like you they are easier to understand. Each major god has a personality and is active in many different spheres. Gods are not necessarily good and pursue their own interest like humans. Some gods had local associations with places: example of mount olympus. Zeus of sparta was slightly different from the zeus of athens: this showed the ideals of the region like, sparta would be a bit more war- oriented. Hesiod, theogony, v. 116: verily at the first chaos (void) came to be.
