Thursday, september 21: the physical setting, end of polis (cid:41804) the physical setting, the agora, a market place, was central to the athenian experience (only 1), it was an extremely important meeting place. The agora had multiple purposes, both equally important to athenian culture: Sharing of informal public opinion and discussion. Keep note also of the role of tholos (meeting, hospitality, housing of executives) and. Physical setting in connection with religion: sculpture crafting was used to honour gods; they were made of gold and ivory (very expensive materials) because gods are characterized by their immortality and less their morality. So, they chose immortal materials in the sense that they never tarnish. Therefore, the most authentic representation of a god would be with these materials. Athena parthanos: virgin because she never had time for men because she was so devoted to her father (not in a weird way)
