Document Summary

Wednesday, september 27: supplication and asylum, armistice and truce, peace and federations. Diplomacy is as old as the concept of war, and is necessary for survival. The greek in particular used diplomatic methods - but they were not diplomatic (polite) in tone. (cid:41804) supplication and asylum. Supplication: the action of asking or begging for something earnestly or humbly: "he fell to his knees in supplication . When faced with a threat to one"s safety, that person could grab onto the knees (or the chin) of the one who they are afraid of as a way of begging for protection. Example: naked odysseus saw foreign princess, yet he was unsure so he wanted her protection. Because he was naked, he did not physically grab her knees but said to her that he is at her knees: branches were symbols of supplication, seeking protection.
