Education that girls received was different from what boys were given, because they have different roles in society. Roles were very important in ancient society. Girls didn"t learn rhetoric, because they didn"t need it, nor will they have political careers or be magistrates. They did need to know how to speak good latin, and basic math. They liked to show themselves to be learned women - female portrait from pompeii, holding stylus close to her mouth. Also showing status of being a woman in the upper class. Portrait of a couple: both wanted to present themselves as learned people. Holding wax tablet and scroll (ancient books) Burned scrolls from the villa of papyri (private library) --> mount vesuvius eruption carbonized the scrolls: hard to unwrap to read. Library of the serapeum of alexandria as reconstructed in the movie "agora" by alejandro. Capsa = portable scroll box, cylindrical box. City vs. countryside: over-refinement vs. real virtue.
