Looking outward: an overview of the greek experience. By 5th century bce they had planted colonies from spain to the west coast of. Asia and from north africa to the black sea. Distinct culture they forged was marked by astonishing creativity, versatility, and resilience, and their speculations on government, war, law, religion, education etc. continue to influence our own culture. We also see a rejection of the divine right to rule (this was talked about in the introductory lecture) Everyone in the grecco-roman world would know and probably have memorized the iliad and the odyssey, but for the romans, there would have been the aeneid.
