Few raw materials, so sea travel important, and ports the most significant cities early on. Easier to travel by sea than over mountain. Quite a bit of trees, most of which have been cut down now. Didn"t have a lot of tin, copper, silver, iron, etc. Had to trade or conquer territory for those resources. Lack of raw materials explains complicated things that happened in ancient greece. Greeks considered modern notion of the nation state. City or town that has territory where people that live in it have legal status with respect to it (citizen, slave, visitor) Geographically conform to what we think of as small cities. Difficult to talk about greece based on territory. Kind of crops seen growing are very different. As time goes on, especially after alexander the great, language seems to become more uniform. Tends to mean you can worship a little bit of everything if you want to.
