Octavian and the transition from republic to empire. In middle of propaganda war (36), lepidus claimed sicily troops deserted him: octavian forced him to retire, octavian and antony"s alliance continued until 33, but very shaky. In 32, octavian declared war on cleopatra: antony, cleopatra got ready to face octavian in greece, battle of actium, 31: antony"s fleet blockaded, octavian won the battle, cleopatra and antony fled to egypt, fleets surrendered. One-man rule, but not too obvious, avoid past mistakes: title princeps senatus (princeps inter pares) the principate. Leader of the senate: 27, resigned & restored republic, gave back power to senate. Senate refused offer, octavian made into augustus: people happy as there was now peace, octavian smart: treated enemies leniently, hid changes behind constitutional terms.
