Document Summary
Bit different from other towns: towns typically located on hills ie. defensible location, smyrna is located on the coast. Spans from the geometric to orientalizing period and then gets destroyed. Looks very planned with houses lying on grid pattern: greeks said that hippodamus invented city planning in the 4th c. but town planning is already seen here, centuries earlier, in south italy, town planning is also seen. By the 7th c. the city is really crowded and town can"t expand because there"s a wall: looks like a slum. Open space in the city plan suggests and agora: we would expect to find this in a polis. Agora = large open space: this is difficult because absence of architecture doesn"t necessarily mean it is an agora (could be a park) Island of chios: site of emporio, located up on the mountain overlooking the harbour, houses date to the 8th c.
