Middle comedy: from the beginning of 4th c. bc to 320 bc: menander (?) New comedy: from 323 to 260 bce. Division into these 3 groups is largely arbitrary. We know a lot about old comedy because of aristophanes. Eupolis atque cratinus aristophanesque poetae horace: according to horace, these were the 3 most important playwrights of old. Held for the first time in 442 bce. Annual athenian festival that had a dramatic competition. Considered a minor festival, especially when compared to the city dionysia. Held in honour of dionysus lenaios connected to wine pressing or to the worshippers of dionysus. Definitely connected with the cult of dionysus and with the sanctuary of dionysus. Sacrifice, procession, and performances were all fundamental parts of the festival.
