Emotion is a relatively brief episode of coordinated brain, autonomic and behavioral changes that facilitate a response to an external or internal event of significance for the organism. (e. g. A response created by biological, perceptual and cognitive events. Feeling is subjective experience of emotions. (e. g. Moods are diffuse affective states that are often of lower intensity than emotion but considerably longer in duration. (e. g. Emotion helps focus attention to more important objects for cognition or prevents attention. Memory recall for an event is better when there is an emotional factor associated with an event. Better recall of personal events during emergency or important situations is known as flashbulb memory. Damage to ventromedial prefrontal cortex affects emotion and executive functions. The prefrontal cortex governs executive functions such as decision-making and planning, including language. The ventromedial area appears to mediate the role of emotion in cognition.
