Document Summary

Week 2: who decides, adults & young audiences. We are the gatekeepers as adults we are the potential parent, teacher or guardian of the audience. Need to reflect on assumptions about what young audiences want or need. Used in street fairs in victorian times long running popular theatre for young audiences. Performed by single puppeteer the shows are quite violent: episode goes into anarchy or comic violence, i. e the simpsons, itchy & scratchy, tom & jerry. He carries a slapstick, signifiying comedic violence. Four groups that exert deciding" influence on tya: adult theatres, political and governmental organizations, educators and educational administrators, artists. Educators, administrators, artists and parents tend to be oriented more towards how thatre affects young audiences now. Shows that focus on exploring without resolving issues, are popular with young audiences and yta companies but get mixed reviews from educators. Art can be ambiguous with its meanings. Life is complex, art chooses to explore the complexity.
