Look at literature and poetry as meaning something other than or in addition to what the author has written. Can address ideas by means of the senses. Can associate dissimilar things by the way of metaphor. Can license the imagination to transcend the miracle. Symbols object or action that subjects some further meaning in addition to itself. Conventional symbol (accepted by custom or agreement by any given culture) ex. Literary symbol complex and less specific, can file off in all directions but not every direction. It is a possibility of direction that the poet will flag for you. A recurring image is a good candidate for a symbol or a something that appears at the climax of any situation. Will direct connotations associated with the symbol by the context in which the symbol appears. Uses symbols in a fixed pattern within a story. Symbols are employed in a continuous and consistent system of a narrative.
