Document Summary

Every detail is relevant, but because they give insight into characters" world views, not because they get tied up into a neat package at the end. Collection of characters, each of whom has a story: Mrs. peebles: superior in social class, bored in the country, rejects standards of femininity (making pies, domestic chores) Loretta bird: low-class, alcoholic husband, too many children, nosy, parasitic. Chris watters: war veteran, constantly on the run from ties, could be extremely awful to eddue but isn"t. Alice kelling: outwardly cultivated and courteous, but under pressure cruel and suspicious- with reason to be. Edie: a girl"s first romantic encounter, which could have dire consequences but doest. First person narration allows the narrator to speak in adulthood about events from her girlhood. It is a combination of na vet and insight: perceived and experienced things that she did not understand at the time, but understands later, and so do we.
