ENGL 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 18: Katherine Mansfield, Bloomsbury Group, Ekphrasis
Document Summary
Katherine mansfield the garden party : life was short, scandalous, ultimately sad. Associated with famous writers (bloomsbury group including virginia woolf), but didn"t achieve fame during her lifetime. Now recognized as one of the most accomplished writers of short fiction. Modernism: mansfield is classified as a modernist, because she participates in an attack on key characteristics of 19th century realism. Objectivity: what happens simply happens, without ambiguity, of multiplicity of perspective. Modernist fiction is still realistic, maybe more realistic than the fiction it replaced. Realism comes not from minute description of an event or scene (ekphrasis), but from description of the consciousness experiencing that event or scene. Subject of fiction= the interior thought processes as they are shaped by experience. Part of a general shift of interest toward the experiencing subject, away from the experience objectively defined (because it cannot be objectively defined). Mansfield"s stories often culminate in moments of revelation.
