How to recognize a writer when you see one: Glaspell: born in 1876 and died in 1948, trifles was published in 1916. Gilman: born in 1860 and died in 1935, the yellow wallpaper was published in 1892. Alllegory: a narrative in which the characters, action and dialogue work to represent an abstract concept. The fable of the ant and the grasshopper, for example, is an allegory advocating industriousness. An extended metaphor in which characters, objects, incidents, and descriptions carry one or more sets of fully developed meanings in addition to the apparent and literal ones. Characters: george henderson (a country attorney), henry peters (sheriff), lewis hale (a neighbouring farmer), mrs. peters, mrs. hale. Separate spheres and interpretive communities, or men, get a clue! Hale: well, women are used to worrying about trifles. The whole play is in the domestic sphere of the kitchen.
