The fable of the ant and the grasshopper, for example, is an allegory advocating industriousness. An extended metaphor in which characters, objects, incidents, and descriptions carry one or more sets of fully developed meanings in addition to the apparent and literal ones. Characters: george henderson (a country attorney), henry peters (sheriff), lewis hale (a neighbouring farmer), mrs. peters, mrs. hale. Separate spheres and interpretive communities, or men, get a clue! Hale: well, women are used to worrying about trifles. The whole play is in the domestic sphere of the kitchen.
