The child has something to do with creativity, you communicate more widely when you communicate through words. Inspiration and writing are far separated but you need both, without writing there is no culture. Paradigm- conceptual framework for understanding an object of knowledge (particular scientific method) Language as naming language as sign system. Assume direct linking or correspondence between name and thing. Mental concept material form- written, spoken, acted out. Tree, material form of thing, signifier, mental concept is idea of what that tree is, signified. Relation of signifier and signified is arbitrary (no natural or inevitable link)
