Document Summary

When we use the term system , we are referring to rocks, when we use the term period we are referring to time. If rock units are subjected to stress, they undergo deformation. Stress may be normal stress (either tension or compression) or shear stress. Type of deformation depends on temperature, confining pressure, rock type and geologic time. If rocks crack, they exhibit brittle behaviour, but if they bend and flow, they have undergone plastic deformation and exhibit ductile behaviour. Normal stress is perpendicular to the surface, shear stress is parallel to the surface. Tilted sedimentary layers are a form of deformation. A number of parallel joints (fractures) is termed a joint set. No movement of rocks along these fractures. Several intersecting joint sets form a joint system. If you are asked to define the term joint set , dont say that it is a number of parallel joints, say it is a number of parallel fractures.
