When we use the term system we are referring to rocks when we use the term period we are referring to time Rock DeformationIf rock units are subjected to stress they undergo deformationstress may be normal stress either tension or compression or shear stresstype of deformation depends on temperature confining pressure rock type and geologic timeIf rocks crack they exhibit brittle behaviour but if they bend and flow they have undergone plastic deformation and exhibit ductile behaviour Normal stress is perpendicular to the surface shear stress is parallel
