GEOL 106 Lecture Notes - Lecture 49: Little Ice Age, Longwave, General Circulation Model
o slightly lower during Little Ice Age from about AD 1400 – 1800
- effect of solar radiation on recent climate change (during instrumental record) can account for small
percentage of observed changes in climate
o but the variability of solar energy is not sufficient to explain the warming since about 1960
CARBON DIOXIDE
- concentration of global carbon dioxide in atmosphere is most important proxy for global
temperature change
- carbon dioxide measurements form instrumental record → have been extended back through
measurements from trapped air in glacial ice
- positive correlation between CO2 in atmosphere collected from ice cores to paleo-temperature
record
-
▪ initially by glacial ice bubble
measurements
GLOBAL CLIMATE MODELS
- mathematical models to represent real world phenomena → describe numerically the linkages and
interactions between natural processes
o to predict flow of surface water and groundwater
o to predict erosion and deposition of stream sediment
