Introduction to the rock cycle and the plate tectonic cycle and introduction to our next natural. What causes earthquakes: movement on faults, stress (pressure) on rocks inside the earth. What causes stress in the earth: release of earth"s internal heat. Energy acts on it: energy from outside the earth (external energy, energy from inside the earth (internal energy, these two energy sources interact at earth"s surface. Interaction between internal and external energy: external energy: wears down the earth"s surface, main contributor is the sun. Sun drives the hydrologic cycle, carrying heat: this external energy from the sun wears down the earth. Solar heat affects the atmosphere and hydrosphere: e. g. greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, e. g. the hydrologic cycle -> it"s not just water moving around, but heat as well, gravity (mainly the moon): 0. 6x10^16. Importance of moon and its tides: we can trap tidal energy, for human use.
