Sex and nuclei - the origin of eukaryotes (cowen, 2013, chapter 3) as we saw in lecture 5, woese"s "universal tree of life" has three main domains: archaea, Bacteria, and eukaryota there is good evidence that archaea and some extremophile groups of the bacteria were present relatively early in the archean, and that bacteria (especially cyanobacteria) dominated most. Proterozoic biotas (lecture 8: what are eukaryotes, and when and how did they appear, abundant oxygen permitted *box 3. 1 single celled (protists) or multicelled (algae, plants, fungi and animals) organisms that differ from prokaryotes in several fundamental respects: 1) dna is encased in a nucleus in the cell, 2) cells contain organelles. This limits the environments in which eukaryotes can live, but provides a huge energy advantage (aerobic respiration is 14x as efficient as anerobic respiration: most eukaryotes reproduce sexually whereas this is rarer among prokaryotes.
