GPHY 103 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Aeration, Eutrophication
Document Summary
Waste water treatment: wastewater often includes sewage and stormwater, facilities may treat both storm water and sewage (because storm water gets mixed into it) Om + o2 co2 + h2: aerobic oxidation (respiration) of om and uses o2, microorganisms used to consume om that promote would increase. Bod in receiving waters: two types, trickling filter. Beds filed with coarse rock and gravel (5-10cm) Microbial biofilms adhere to rock and consume om in wastewater. Air (02) is introduced to promote aerobic oxidation: activated sludge. Effluent is agitated and aerated in a bioreactor. Sludge contains aerobic organisms that digest om. Millions of bacteria, bound as gelatinous slime. Sludge (settled flocs), is removed, some recycled to the reactor to renew bacteria populations. A problem is the fact that dish soap and other cleaning products like that that are flushed down the drain are not really filtered out at all during any of these 3 steps.
