Document Summary

Week 1 & 2 trees & forests. Roots: anchorage, soil stability, contribution to soil carbon. Trunks, branches, stems: structural support, habitat & food for ora & fauna. Trunk, branches, stems: water, mineral, & sugar transport. Leaves: food production, water & temperature regulation. Tree water demand: the amount of water a tree needs in order to maintain its metabolism at optimum levels in order to meet its physiological needs. Different trees and different tree species need more or less water: depends on maturity, location, genes, climate, soil type, soil moisture. More light at the top of the canopy means more transpiration than below the canopy. Apical meristems: responsible for primary growth (up and down in roots) Lateral meristems: lateral growth (important for wood) Heartwood is dead and more resistant to decay: it is lled with resins. Sapwood is the xylem that continues to transport water and materials: it is still living until the tree ages and it turns to heartwood.
