Description
The Yoke Of Empire Intro: Epidemic – Something when it’s introduced has catastrophic impact. Those disease that  were brought by the Spaniards early on. But they were diseases that were endemic  (measles you catch as a child and then you never get them again). Physiological  indigenous south Americans cannot survive. Disease was introduced to a virgin soil. In  Mesoamerica plants were the things that were domesticated NOT animals like in the Old  World. There was nothing at all as devastating in the New World – Syphilis. When  archeologist excavate they found lesions in bones from syphilis. Males come over from  Spin, they are conquerors. Principle port for conducting trade with the new world was Seville. Spaniards had never  seen syphilis before – called it New World Pox. Syphilis moves out of spain and into  France – Call it Spanish Pox. Them sailors transfer it to Italy – they call it French Pox. The Black Caribs/ Garifuna Experience: • Most of the island Caribbean was depopulated within a generation • Almost an extinction but some people survived • The Tainos did not survive • Indigenous Caribs started have sex with freed black slaves in the Caribbean • Would light bonefires and lure ships into unsafe passages o Black Caribs (Garifuna) would save the shipwreck and bring them into
