Hydroelectricity in ontario; much lower magnitude than the hep dams in quebec. Biggest producer in ontario is beck station at niagara falls. Compare to the three gorges dam; biggest dam in the world right now: yangtze river, originally envisioned by sun yatsen in 1919. Political and economic events resulted in numerous delays. Construction started december 1994: the world"s largest hep dam (about 22,500 mw), on the yangtze river. Equivalent of burning 50m tons of coal per year. 185m high, 2300m long: the dam was fully functional as of july 2012, also provides flood control and navigation benefits, locks. Two series of locks (one for each direction) each with 5 stages, transit time 4-5 hours to go through in one direction. Freight capacity increased 6 fold, and costs of shopping reduced by 25: ship lift. Elevator" lifts vessels up to 3000 tons, 113m. The first operational use of the lift was on september 18, 2016.
