Forests: a dense growth of trees and shrubs covering a large area: this de nition has many subjective terms and can vary by country, region, culture, etc. Some parameters can include that of canopy cover and closure: canopy cover is measured in vertical direction, canopy closure involves an angle of view. De nitions also include environmental conditions (latitude, rainfall patterns, soil composition) At least 20% canopy closure and a minimum of 0. 5 ha. At least 30% canopy closure, minimum of 1 ha, and minimum tree height of 5m. Minimum crown cover of 20%, minimum area of 0. 67ha, and minimum tree hight of 2m. At least 1 acre in size and at least 10% occupied by forest trees of any size. Forest land also includes that of transition zones (areas between heavily forested lands) There is ~751. 2 million acres of forest land: nearly 34% is federally owned. Land primary intended for growing, or currently supporting, forests.
