Week 1 lecture 1 september 12th, 2018. If we want to change or preserve the world, understanding theory is an essential underpinning. It relies on the idea that there is an essential difference between the east and the west. Places where the philosopher (the thinker or wise man) is the king: religious sources ex. Bible as a source of geographical imagination: mythology ex. People traveling come home with stories: travelers" tales. Common themes in orientalist discourse: sexual fantasy: south as erotic and exotic, close to nature, mis-recognizing of difference, noble savages , threatening and menacing place, requires development assistance something has to be done to make these people modern. The modernized west denigrated the east in art as a prelude to colonizing it.
