GNDS 120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Invisibility, Masculinity

53 views1 pages

Document Summary

Masculinity should not be attached to a physical body. By picturing a body you are limiting your views. Katz used the word de-gendering relating to identifying perpetrators of violence as shooters or teens instead of identifying them as they are (usually male). Therefore it gets left out of the conversation of gender. Masculinity becomes this when it subordinates other masculinities, genders, and social groups, and then convinces a significant proportion of them of its right to rule. Hegemony is used to explain why, in a class divided society, the wealthy manage to rule over masses of workers with workers submitting to being rules. Will occur for as long as the oppressed workers let it happen. Used for white heterosexual males who were able to provide for their families and were civilized people. All men, even men of colour had masculinity but it was not seen as having the same prestige as manliness.
