Document Summary

Sugar: first found in india, spreads to the middle east and europe. Europe"s quest for sugar led to plantations across the caribbean and resulted in slave labour. Every country has had some degree of contribution to making sugar popular in the modern world. Major themes: change- we cannot change what has happened, only our lenses and how we reflect on things change. For example, some movies made in the past are seen as offensive now but cannot be redone: production, trade, religion, war, discovery and navigation, knowledge/enlightenment, identity, difference. Who is telling the story?- the luba people recorded history via a memory board", which is a thing where beads and things are inserted to represent events occurring. Only certain people can interpret it; it is proof that the luba people did actually record part of history.
