HIST 122 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: 1905 Russian Revolution, Anti-Imperialism, Petrograd Soviet
Document Summary
Primary resistance is right at the beginning, when various battles and warfare are fought against a colonized force. Doesn"t last for very long because eventually dominated. May seem like simple idea, but complicated concept. Domination always in conflict with liminal zone where desire for freedom exists. Colonialism only possible when there is understanding between colonized forces and elite class. When that equation changes, that"s when anti-colonialism starts. Economic: late 18th century, private land introduced that involved new taxation system. Cultural: people take to new languages brought over by colonized forces. English became the lingua franca of the world as a consequence. Not something tangible, like clothing, language, food, etc. Deeply ingrained in the psyche is a sense of inferiority. Psychologically people start thinking that perhaps this is good for us. Domination achieved only when psychological domination has been achieved. Any theory, understanding, etc. of resistance has to look at specific nature of relationship between two opposing forces.
