HIST 221 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Messiah In Judaism, Pauline Christianity, New Covenant
Document Summary
Hist 221 jewish history; november 1, 2016. Jesus believed to have been born around 4 b. c. near nazareth. Romans had domination over the jews at this point: romans are religiously tolerant, but intolerant of jewish politics. Diverse judaism at this time: upper class jews who were temple oriented and okay with the romans, lower class jews who were torah oriented and hated the romans, dead sea scrolls written by essenes. Essenes are a splintered group that came from the temple. Separated themselves from the romans to purify judaism. Also known as radicals: pharisees/rabbis represent new torah centered. Hillel: sadducees/priests represent temple centered judaism. Kingdom of god on earth is symbolic, but never physical. Temple is also symbolic, a gift from god, symbolizing their relationship. Jesus made a split in judaism, though not completely intentionally: he wanted to reform and purify judaism. Solution to the challenge of the split was the crystallization of judaism.
