Week 7 part ii: 1960s revolution and reaction (chile, argentina, uruguay) Chile: electoral socialism under salvador allende: background to 1970 election: Became a central stage in which the cold war fought. Was important because of the 1970 election as a revolutionary government came to power through a free and fair election (first time in history) by salvador allende gossens. 1973: overthrown by a violent military uprising. Allende was killed (staged as a suicide) and palace was bombed. Chile became a crucial point of world public opinion because of the debate of the us"s role in overthrowing allende and his government, while supporting the military government. The us supporting a military coup was an example of the corruption and evilness of us policy. Throughout the 20th century, chile was a stable and democratic nation by la standards. Avoided the chaos of 19th century, though it endured a few invasions.
