Foucault"s train of thinking was to consider the history of the present . Simply: the present is a outcome of the past. Finding problems in present society and tracing it back through history. Alternate definition: using genealogy tracing family history but applying this concept to history. Example: foucault traced the roots of modern day surveillance back to the creation of prisons in his work of discipline and punishments 1975. He determined that the idea of surveying subjects allowed them to be reformed; power over people can be the result of merely observing them. By using foucault"s technique, which is not to be mistaken with presentism the act of analyzing a historical event and applying modern ideas and concepts we can help to answer questions such as: Foucault: where there is power over us, there is resistance. If power always meets resistance, there is never a way to settle the past.
