Hist 210 lecture october 6 + 9 2015: settler/sexual colonialism. White euro canadians attempted to extend their rule over aboriginal peoples and indigenous lands in what we now call canada. Colonialism not a thing of the past it is still with us in many different ways; Sexual colonialism europeans projecting onto aboriginal cultures their notion of sex/sodomy. Many abg cultures did not distinguish people on the basis of their sexual activities (cid:455)ou(cid:396) ge(cid:374)de(cid:396) (cid:373)atte(cid:396)ed, (cid:271)ut (cid:374)ot (cid:862)(cid:449)ho (cid:455)ou had se(cid:454) (cid:449)ith(cid:863) Not divided between heterosexuals and homosexuals, etc. Two-spirit does not refer to sexual orientation at all whatsoever, however, they did often partner with someone of the same sex: two-spirit marriages. Two-spirited people often married people of the same sex. Abg people were aware of the difference between their sex/gender system and the europeans system. Europeans thought they were culturally superior to the abgs: decline of the two-spirit tradition. Europeans attempted to wipe out the two-spirited tradition.
