March 10 March-10-14 2:35 PM • Villages: Byzantine empire was largely rural • Coloni, or paroikoi • Land owners, people work for them (work the land) • Peasants were not usually literate, so how do we know about them? o The literate peoples (the higher classes) don't care about the peasants o We get some information from archaeology o Records: tax, marriage, etc o Just little glimpses of people's lives o Some art (biblical scenes) • Regional variations • Early cities/villages aren't just the houses o Gardens go with each house o Behind the village is the cultivated lands where the crops are grown o And behind the farm land is the uncultivated land, or the wilderness o Autarkeia ­ self sufficiency • Usually villages are unwalled o Group together for security • Villages must have 3 things o Point of security (somewhere you can flee to in danger, an acropolis, near by  hills, caves) o Water ­ stream, springs, cisterns o Religious centre ­ church(es), monastery  • Village patterns o Enclosed houses and gardens o Not in a team work mentality o No public buildings really ­ only the church o Sometimes a square, but not necessary o No shared resources; things like mills are privately owned and operated o Women would talk around a well ­ getting water for the house • Or while washing the clothes in the river • Cemeteries o Largely independawnt lifestyles o Variants: • Some villages are built around large estates, but not like the west o Each house has it's own regional style, much like the villages themselves o What the house is constructed of depends on where you live o Must: • House the people • Animals • Equipment o Arrangement will depend on region • Animals usually below, on lower level • Buildings are small • Not many windows to legt the elements in, thus dark  buildings • The more rooms you had, the wealthier you were • Most people sleep in a loft, or on beds or benches on the walls around the  main room (with the fire place in the middle) •
