March 31 March-31-14 2:39 PM • What is the Byzantium that all this evokes? Has that Byzantium anything to do with the  way the Byzantines saw or identified themselves? • They never called themselves Byzantines o Maybe we should call them Byzantine Romans • Identity o Genos and ethnos • Genos: race, stock, kin, state  Biological relationship • Ethnos: cultural/foreign group  Not exactly like ethnicity  The byzantines would view ethnicity more along the lines of  Genos o Who they are NOT: • Barbaros/oi (barbarian)  Those outside borders of empire, not speaking latin or greek  Later...not politically or religiously in agreement with  Constantinople o Romans: politically loyal to emperor o Byzantine hybridity o 6th Cent Carthage • Loyalty to the emperor o Religion, and Christian 'orthodoxy' o But: • Are iconoclasts, het
