HIST 222 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Jewish Question, Individualism, Nationstates
Document Summary
Week 3 lecture: the jewish question in france. Centralized state administrations in place of the medieval system of corporate estates. Jewish part of this question- their own identity- challenge to autonomous religious community. Expulsion of jews did not change their identity because they didn"t have a strong connection to. Community was extremely important, it was the first thing challenged by the onset of the modern era. End of 18th century: european world"s social organization shifted from collectivization to individualization. Shift was so significant that it required rearranging of previous groups/social hierarchies. Shift applied to all social groups, including the jews. Jews were protected by the ruler, the church, and contributed to medieval society though it was extremely difficult and no one questioned it. They were no longer a comfortable collective, they were individuals in society. There was the big question of loyalty of jews to the state.
