Document Summary

Use indigenous allies (enemies of polities), capture slaves, and capture and use translators. Enslave and move thousands of amerindian slaves for ready labor and military supplies. Hispaniola (dominican republic and haiti) was invaded first in 1493. Brought cattle, seeds for european crops, people, africans (slaves and free). Capture the caciques (leader) and negotiate, created a labor system. Spaniards sent other expeditions out to cuba, puerto rico, jamaica, florida - where they built settlements and dominated. Disease killed 90% of the population, which created more vulnerability. Set up a system of encomienda: grant of laborers to an individual spaniard in reward for military service. Take the existing relationships between cacique and his subjects, with a layer on top of the cacique being the spanish. Was an exploitative system, all supplies and revenue was given to the spanish. Unskilled laborers would go into mines (gold was a huge resource) and majority would die.
