Maps are helpful because the books will just give you the town name, but the different counties are really important. Quizzes will be on thursdays on the week"s readings. Irish history is really weird: used to legitimize violence in ireland today- past 200 years, give all sides of the question equal representation, touchy subjects are very important and need to be brought up in a historical context. The way the english and irish viewed each other, especially in the 19th century: herder vs. hebel. Influenced nietzsche, darwin, and marx, who in turn influenced 19th century nationalism (bound up with what we know today as racism)- leading in turn to intense forms, ex: Nazism: irish monkey vs. british lion- developed over the 19th century, british thought the irish and africans were lower on the evolutionary chain, ireland was equally guilty of racializing themselves. Saw themselves as clinging to the church.
