Irish parliament (made up of the ascendency) resisted merging with great britain: many were descendents of the new english, they were very independently minded, 1782. 1790s things changed: britain was at war with france starting 1793, people were nervous about ireland s security shook their independence, rebellion of 1798 was a bloodbath it scared people. Passed 161 to 115 in irish parliament. Had been 300 members of ireland parliament: 100 irish members to the british house of commons, 32 irish members to the british house of lords, suddenly ireland lost half of its representatives.
