Zionist notion was that palestine was a "peopleless land for a landless people" but there is a tension here as palestinians were there and overlooked. Palestinian nationalism on the rise in 1900s. After wwi europe cut the ottoman empire into mandates where each european country got a piece. British got palestine, jordan and part of lebanon. In 1920s british cut trans-jordan off of the mandate. 750 000 arabs were expelled/fled from the area that became israel. Israel has not let them return on the basis that they fled.
