What is Population Health? What is the population health approach?
- Population Health is defined as the health outcome of a group of people
oGroup can be located geographically in a country, province, region, city or
neighborhood, or racial group
- Population health is measured as lifespan aka longevity
- Indigenous people live up to 11 years less than non-Indigenous Canadians
What is the Population Health approach?
- Public Health Agency of Canada describes population health approach as “an approach
to health that aims to
o1. Improve health of the entire population and to
o2. Reduce health inequities among population groups
- Sometimes changes in social, economic and health policies mean that the overall life
expectancies improve, but health inequities continue to get larger
ARE INDIVIDUAL RISKS FOR DISEASE THE SAME AS POPULATION RISKS FOR DISEASE?
- There is no correlation between understanding an individual’s risk of health to that of a
population’s risk of health. Or vice versa
- Geoffrey Rose – Help us understand the Population Risk of Health
Individual Level
- Can screen for risk factors like high blood pressure, cholesterol levels
Rose’s Prevention Paradox
- “A preventative measure that brings much benefit to the population offers little to each
participating individual”
- example: seatbelt legislation – because everyone uses seatbelts, when there is a motor
vehicle accidents, serious injuries and deaths are much less likely. As a whole, it helps
