LAW 202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Constitution Act, 1982, Iroquois
Recall that the Constitution Act, 1982, defined the Aboriginal
peoples of Canada as including the Indian Inuit and Metis
peoples.
As mentioned earlier, the term Indian should be avoided.
• It began to be replaced in the 1970's with “First Nations”
• It is important to emphasize that this is a collective term which groups are very diverse
number of peoples each with its own unique history, culture, and sense of identity.
• From the Mi Kmag? of the east coast to the haida on the west coast and from the
Haudenosaunee in the South to the denay? in the North, each first nation has its own
unique identity
While many first nations people live on reserves,
many others live outside reserves & in urban
areas.
• According to 2011 census data, first nation's people = 2.6%
of the population of Canada and 60.8% of the total
Aboriginal population.
• You can find profiles of the 618 first nations communities recognized by the federal
government on the indigenous and northern affairs Canada website.
