Document Summary
Site where 2 or more bones interconnect. Only place where movement occurs in the skeleton. A joint"s structure determines its function important because bones are not flexible and immovable: type of movement and range of movement rom. Have to compromise between strength and mobility e. g. sutures of the skull, high strength, low mobility. Have to compromise between strength and mobility e. g. sutures of the skull, high strength, low mobility e. g. shoulder, high mobility, but have to sacrifice strength. Articulating bones are close together, interlocked and may even fuse over time. Fibrous: bones joined together by dense fibrous connective tissue e. g. between bones of skull tissue e. g. between bones of skull e. g. joint between teeth and their bony sockets in the maxilla and mandible e. g. periodontal ligament. Cartilaginous: cartilaginous connection between bones e. g. sternum and first pair of ribs e. g. epiphyseal cartilage. Bony fusion: created by fusion of two bones, boundary separating bones disappears upon fusion.
